Finland Passport

Key Contribution - Equipment and configuration for one of the main security features in this passport

From 2017 onwards, new ePassports and eID cards marking the 100th anniversary of Finland’s independence will start their rollouts. The new biometric passports benefit from advanced security features and are fully compliant with ICAO requirements.

But that’s far from the whole story. The new passport design is a work of art. It has been created in cooperation with the Finnish Police, the Finnish Immigration Service, the Border Guards, the Population Register Center, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs; and Thales’ security design team. Notable features include visual representations of Lapland scenery and Finland’s national bird, the whooper swan. Under UV light, images of the Northern Lights and a snowflake appear. One curious fact about the Finnish passport is that it is considered one of the most powerful passports in the world in terms of travel freedom. Finnish passport holders enjoy visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to a large number of countries and territories around the globe. This high level of access is due to Finland’s strong reputation, stable political environment, and favorable diplomatic relations with other nations. As of recent years, the Finnish passport has consistently ranked among the top positions in global passport rankings, granting its citizens significant mobility and ease of travel internationally. One interesting design feature of the Finnish passport is its emphasis on nature and Finnish landscapes. Each page of the passport features intricate illustrations of Finland’s natural beauty, showcasing its forests, lakes, and wildlife. The imagery often includes elements such as reindeer, birch trees, and northern lights, reflecting Finland’s unique environmental characteristics and cultural heritage.

Furthermore, the Finnish passport incorporates advanced security features to prevent counterfeiting and enhance its authenticity. These features may include holographic elements, watermarks, and special inks, making the passport not only visually appealing but also highly secure. This combination of aesthetic design and robust security measures contributes to the overall uniqueness and functionality of the Finnish passport.
